Hindsight

Hindsight is 20/20

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained by living a godly life.

Proverbs 16:31 New Living Translation (NLT)

Hindsight is good…as long as we are looking through a clear lens.

In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

Exodus 16:2-3 New International Version (NIV)

Hindsight helps us realize a better course of action for the future.

as long as we don’t get caught up in the:Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda, If Only, What If

Happiness and inner peace is crucial to let bygones be bygones but only after learning any needed lessons.

We can learn from the past but we must not camp out there!

Unconditional Love = Agape Love

God does not define you by your mistakes.

Forgiveness: giving up all hope of a better past

As they [Jesus and the disciples] were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:57-62 (NIV)

The blessing comes after the stepping!

Say YES to a future with Jesus!

Revered

Glory: something marked by great beauty,
splendor, power, and magnificence

When Jesus came it was
a declaration of the greatest glory possible!

God’s Glory:

  • Foretold centuries before Jesus’ birth
  • Conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit
  • Sustained in Joseph who was obedient
  • Revealed as Jesus the long-awaited One

Glory Revered

Revere: to feel a deep respect or admiration
for something or someone;
to worship, honor, or adore.

At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to the Temple.
So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there.

He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for
all people. His is alight to reveal God
to the nations, and he is the glory
of your people Israel!”

Luke 2:25-32 New Living Translation (NLT)

Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed;
all came to pass.

Joshua 21:45 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

God Revered in the Highest!

Lessons From Simeon:

God wants us to pay attention!
God is the One who keeps His promises!
God’s GLORY in Christ the Messiah
is to be praised and revered!

Revealed

GOD’S GLORY:

  • Foretold centuries before Jesus’ birth
  • Conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit
  • Sustained in Joseph who was obedient
  • Proclaimed by angels and shepherds

Glory: (latin gloria)- something marked with great beauty,
splendor, power, magnificence

Glory Revealed: the manifestation or visible sign of
God’s beauty, splendor, power,
and magnificence made available to us.

And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,
torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord,
for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord,
but the Lord was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake,
but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it,
he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him,
“What are you doing here, Elijah?”

1 Kings 19:9b-13 New International Version (NIV)

NOTHING is impossible for GOD

And the angel said to them,
“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news
of great joy that will be for all the people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths
and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:10-12 English Standard Version (ESV)

Why did God choose to enter the world this way?

The irony of the census
called for by Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus

Jesus came into the world
in a whisper…

…that whisper is God’s saving grace that changes everything!

Where do you need for God’s glory to be revealed
in your life?

“I have told you these things,
so that in me you may have peace.
In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart!
I have overcome the world.”

John 16:33 (NIV)

Glory Revealed: God’s Grace in a Manger

Proclaimed

Proclamation- The public or official announcement of an important matter. An official message.

B.C. – before Christ
A.D. (Anno Domini) – in the year of our Lord

B.C.E. – before the common era
C.E. – common era

There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant
for everybody, worldwide:
A Savior has just been born in David’s town,
a Savior who is Messiah and Master.
This is what you’re to look for:
a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:8-12 The Message (MSG)

Shepherds play an
important role
in God’s story
with God’s people.

Jesus came for everyone!

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running,
and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in
the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

Luke 2:13-18 (MSG)

The shepherds became proclaimers

Mary kept all these things to herself,
holding them dear, deep within herself.
The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they’d been told.

Luke 2:12-20 (MSG)

Let’s Proclaim Jesus’ Birth!

Sustained

This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah
the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.

Matthew 1:1-2 New International Version (NIV)

Thus there were fourteen generations in all
from Abraham to David, fourteen from
David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Matthew 1:17 (NIV)

Elihud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,
and Jacob the father of Joseph,
the husband of Mary, and Mary was
the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

Matthew 1:15-16 (NIV)

GOD IS AWESOME!

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah
came about: His mother Mary was pledged
to be married to Joseph,
but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
Because Joseph her husband was faithful
to the law, and yet did not want to expose
her to public disgrace,
he had in mind to divorce her quickly.

Matthew 1:18-19 (NIV)

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet [Isaiah]: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us.”)

Matthew 1:20-23 (NIV)

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took Mary home as his wife.
But he did not consummate their marriage until
she gave birth to a son.
And he gave him the name Jesus.

Matthew 1:24-25 (NIV)

GOD’S GLORY WAS SUSTAINED THROUGH JESUS

Conceived

Gloria- [Latin] something marked by great beauty, splendor, power, magnificence

Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”

Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”

Exodus 33:18-23 New International Version (NIV)

Conceive – Concipere
[Latin] : to take in

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy,
God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.
The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are
highly favored! The Lord is with you!”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

Luke 1: 26-29 (NIV)

But the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to
a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom
will never end.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
But the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary;
you have found favor with God.
You will conceive and give birth to a son,
and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Luke 1: 30-33 (NIV)

“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel,
“since I am a virgin?” The angel answered,
“The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.
For no word from God will ever fail.”

Luke 1:34-37 (NIV)

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.
“May your word to me be fulfilled.”
Then the angel left her.

Luke 1:38 (NIV)

GOD ONLY KNOWS!

But you, Bethlehem, David’s country, the runt of the litter – from you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule Israel. He’ll be no upstart,
no pretender. His family tree is ancient and distinguished. Meanwhile, Israel will be in foster homes until the birth pangs are over and the child is born, and the scattered brothers come back home to the family of Israel.

He will stand tall in his shepherd-rule by God’s strength, centered in the majesty of God-Revealed. And the people will have a good and safe home, for the whole world will hold him in respect – Peacemaker of the world!

Micah 5:2-4 The Message (MSG)

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.

He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Luke 2:1-7 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Isaiah 7:14 New International Version (NIV)

Immanuel – GOD WITH US

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Your Money

A Call to Stewardship – Dave Ramsey

The Bible contains 2350 verses on
money and possessions.
(Faith – 458 times; Love – 686 times)

15% of what Jesus said is related
to issues of money

Back to the Beginning…

Steward- one who cares for something owned by someone else, managing something
on someone’s behalf

To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.

Deuteronomy 10:14 (NIV)

Lock It Up: GOD’S MONEY

“No one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate the one and love
the other, or you will be devoted to
the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and money.”

Matthew 6:24 (NIV)

who or what is your #1

John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money
and don’t accuse people falsely —
be content with your pay.”

Luke 3:11-14 (NIV)

Be Generous  – Be Fair and Honest  – Be Content

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.
“Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Luke 21:1-4 (NIV)

A “Tithe” is a tenth.

“Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,”
says the Lord Almighty.
“But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me.”
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse,
that there may be food in my house.
Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty,
“and see if I will not throw open the floodgates
of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

Malachi 3: 7-10 (NIV)

Your Mood

MOOD- a temporary state of mind or feeling, an emotional state

EMOTION – the outward expression of our mood

Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.

Proverbs 16:32 New Living Translation (NLT)

A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.

Proverbs 25:28 (NLT)

Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.

Proverbs 29:11 (NLT)

Guard your heart above all else for it determines the course of your life.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.

Proverbs 15:1 (NLT)

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

1 Corinthians 13

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.

1 Corinthians 13:11 (NLT)

At that time, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like
little children, you will never enter the kingdom
of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Matthew 18:1-5 New International Version (NIV)

Jesus is our Change Agent

Your Mouth

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”

Luke 6:45 (NLT)

If we want to lock up our mouths,
the first step is to set right our hearts

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

Colossians 3:1 (NIV)

The 3 C’s

CRITICISM

…consider how to spur one another on towards love and good deeds

Hebrews 10:24 (NIV)

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

COMPLAINT
– “express dissatisfaction or annoyance about something.”

– Is the thing that we are complaining about a genuine issue, or just an irritation because we would have done it differently if
in control ourselves?’

-It’s voicing frustration that their personality
and gifts are unique to them and not a
mirror-image of our own.

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars
in the universe as you hold onto the
Word of Life…

Philippians 3:14-16 (NIV)

CARELESSNESS

He who guards his lips guards
his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

Proverbs 13:3 (NIV)

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing.
My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from
the same spring?

JAMEs 3: 9-11 (NIV)
