The Best Gift Ever

A GIFT IS FREELY GIVEN

Gifts – Ralph Waldo Emmerson (1844)

A gift is freely given.
A gift should have some thing of the giver in it.
A gift should have the character of the receiver in it.
The best gifts are somewhat extravagant.
The best gifts change our lives.

I love personal gifts. Thankfully, I am surrounded by artists. I have stained glassed windows my mom made, paintings that my sister and brother-in-law collaborated on, and a painting from my dear friend Randy Jacobs. When I look at them,
I feel their love and appreciate their talent.
Those gifts are priceless. – Jen Welder

Christ is truly a gift, freely given
Jesus has something of the receiver in Him, something of you and me.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6-7
New International Version (NIV)

Jesus has something of the giver in Him

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:20 (NIV)

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Father, it is the Father, living in me,
who is doing his work.
John 14:8-10 (NIV)

Jesus is an extravagant gift.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but to save the world through him.
John 3:16 (NIV)

Jesus changes our lives

If anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation;
the old is gone, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17

The Long-Awaited

1 Samuel 1:2-2:21 – Elkanah, Peninnah, and Hannah

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Isaiah 7:14 (NIV) New International Version

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time
on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV)

In Jerusalem at the time, there was a man, Simeon by name, a good man, a man who lived in the prayerful expectancy of help for Israel. And the Holy Spirit was on him. The Holy Spirit had shown him that he would see the Messiah of God before he died. Led by the Spirit,
he entered the Temple. As the parents of the child Jesus brought him in to carry out the rituals of the Law, Simeon took him into his arms and blessed God: God, you can now release your servant; release me in peace as you promised. With my own eyes I’ve seen your salvation; it’s now out in the open for everyone to see: A God-revealing light to the non-Jewish nations, and of glory for your people Israel.

Luke 2:25-32 (MSG) The Message

Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher,
and she was very old. Her husband died when they had been married only seven years. Then she lived
as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night,
worshiping God with fasting and prayer. She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.

Luke 2:36-38 (NIV)

What are you waiting for this Christmas?

The Stocking Stuffers

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was
governor of Syria.) And everyone went to
their own town to register.

Luke 2:1-3 (NIV)

But you, Bethlehem, David’s country, the runt of the litter — From you will come the leader who will
shepherd-rule Israel. He’ll be no upstart, no pretender. His family tree is ancient and distinguished.
Meanwhile, Israel will be in foster homes until the birth pangs are over and the child is born, and the scattered brothers come back home to the family of Israel.
He will stand tall in his shepherd-rule by God’s strength, centered in the majesty of God-Revealed. And the people will have a good and safe home, for the whole world will hold him in respect — Peacemaker of the world!

Micah 5:2-4 (MSG)

God is in the details!

Jesus came to earth, not to live in a palace, but to live with us.

Are you ready for something new?

The Unexpected

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy,
God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David.
The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered
what kind of greeting this might be.

Luke 1:26-29 (NIV)

But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How can this be,”
Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

Luke 1: 30-34 (NIV)

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come
on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her
sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.”
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered.
“May your word to me be fulfilled.”
Then the angel left her.

Luke 1: 35-38 (NIV)

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me — holy is his name.

Luke 1: 46-49 (NIV)

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save
his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord and commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son.
And he gave him the name Jesus.

Matthew 1:20-25(NIV)

How about you?

Priceless Generosity

1 Kings 17: Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath

“For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

1 Kings 17:14
New International Version (NIV)

Every time we are moved to the possibility of generosity,
we stand in this woman’s shoes.

How we grapple with this re-supply promise of God will determine our generosity in the future.

She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not
run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.

I Kings 17:15-16 (NIV)

You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus. Our God and Father abounds in glory that just pours out into eternity. Yes.

Philippians 4:19-20
The Message (MSG)

The story of Fred and Ted

What kind of idiot do you want to be?

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said,
“this poor widow has put in more than
all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her
poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Luke 21:1-4 (NIV) [The Widow’s Mite]

It’s not so much the gift,
but the heart of the giver

God’s greatest gift to us: Jesus

Priceless Generosity!

What kind of idiot do you want to be?
It’s not the size of the gift, but the size of the heart that matters.
The true condition of the heart is revealed when we give.

You Are Priceless

Priceless – something so precious that its value cannot be determined, when it’s worth is measured in terms of other-than-market value.

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”
Matthew 13:44-46 New International Version (NIV)

Why would God create you for a purpose, only to have you think you have no purpose?

Matthew 10 – Jesus sends out the Twelve

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:29-31 (NIV)

Ephesians 2 – Alive in Christ

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Ephesians 2:10 New Living Translation

In God’s eyes, you are priceless!

Beginning today, make a pledge to yourself…

Our Priceless Opportunities

Priceless- Something so precious that its value cannot be determined, when its worth is measured in terms of other-than-market value.

So God created humankind in his image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:27
New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Abraham: Genesis 12-25

Moses: Exodus, Leviticus,
Numbers, Deuteronomy

David: 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles, 1 Kings, Psalms

Deborah: Judges 4

Jael: Judges 4

Judges 4: Judges 6-8

Unnamed Servants: John 2

In ancient Israel, shepherds were generally considered “unclean” in the community of God’s people because of the work they did. They were in daily contact with dirty, smelly sheep, their manure, their blood from cuts and scrapes, and the insects that buzzed around them. All of this meant that shepherds were almost never clean enough to worship with God’s people in God’s presence.
So they were generally treated as outsiders.

Priceless opportunities God offers us!

Then Jesus came to them and said,
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matthew 28:18-20
New International Version (NIV)

So… What About You?

God’s Priceless Love

Priceless-  Something is priceless when it is so precious that its value cannot be determined, when its worth is measured in terms of
other-than-market value.

GOD’S LOVE IS PRICELESS

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the
great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.

Psalm 36 (New International Version) NIV

Greater love has no one than this:
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

John 15:13 (NIV)

PRICELESS LOVE – PRICELESS GIFT

#masks

Hashtag- a social media link created by placing the pound sign (#) in front of a word of phrase. Also used simply for emphasis, focus, and/or humor.

Sadly, even when we are clothed in Christ, we often continue to live just like those still in hiding. Failing to grasp the full gospel, we often continue to struggle with guilt, shame, and fear,
living defeated lives that condemn us for past or present sins. We hide behind masks that,
in actuality, keep us from experiencing the joy
and peace that is rightfully ours in Christ. – Linda Green, Where Are You Hiding? (BLOG), 08/04/14

Mask of Self-Sufficiency

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming for us,
but our sufficiency is from God,…

2 Corinthians 3:5 (NIV)

Mask of
“Everything’s fine, thank you.”

Hidden behind this mask [the mask of “Everything’s fine, thank you”] are many things, but most of all, fear. When we are clothed in Christ, we are adopted into God’s family where we should also find acceptance and encouragement from the body
of believers. Sadly, we have all experienced some measure of betrayal, hurt, and rejection.
This can send us scurrying back to our masks, adding more layers to our wall of self-protection. – Linda Green, Where Are You Hiding? (BLOG), 08/04/14

Carry each other’s burdens,
