Patience

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23
English Standard Version (ESV)

Patience with ourselves.
Patience with others.
Patience with God.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

Psalm 103:8
New International Version (NIV)

Where do you need
patience with yourself?

Love your neighbor as yourself.
(Who is our neighbor? Everyone!)

Mark 12:31(NIV)

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy,
it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5(NIV)

Patience gives your spouse permission to be human.
It understands that everyone fails. When a mistake is made, it chooses to give them more time that they deserve to correct it. It gives you the ability to hold on during the rough times in your relationship
rather than bailing out under the pressure.

Alex and Stephen Kendrick,
The Love Dare

Where do you need
patience with others?

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he runs the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46 (NIV)

“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Patience goes hand-in-hand with waiting

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not grow faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait
for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and to be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:28-31 (NRSV)
New Revised Standard Version

Where do you need to be patient and wait on the Lord?

If you’re serious about sanctification
[getting ever closer to God],
you can expect to experience heart-wrenching moments that try your faith, your endurance, and your patience.

Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.

2 Thessalonians 1:4 NRSV

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame,
and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-2 NRSV

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 NRSV

Here’s one description you won’t hear from my friends: triple-amputee veteran of the Iraq War.
That description is accurate – up to a point.  Yes, I fought in Iraq. I was wounded  in an IED blast. And I lost both of my legs
and my left hand. But none of that defines me.  It has been 11 years since my injury. And it has been 11 years since I last thought being wounded in war would ruin my life.

“You know you have basically
two options here, right?”
I nodded. “Yup. Move on – or roll over and die.”
“And you’re going to…”
“Move on,” I said.

I still remember that moment in the hospital when Mom asked me what I planned to do — roll over and die,
or move on. In a way, it’s a question everyone faces at some point in their lives. Sometimes people have to ask that question every day. Now you know why my answer is move on, move up, keep going. What happens to you is not an accident, not a cruel twist of fate. It’s the life God intended for you to live. Live it.
And if you’re anything like me, you’ll live it at top speed.

Perspective

PERSPECTIVE IS EVERYTHING

Numbers 13 & 14
Moses leading the Hebrew people

Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”

Numbers 13:30-33
New International Version (NIV)

“If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for
us to go back to Egypt?” And they said to each other,
“We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

Numbers 14:2b-4 (NIV)

IT’S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone,
but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
But the whole assembly talked about stoning them.

Numbers 14:5-10a (NIV)

“We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes,
and we looked the same to them.”

Numbers 13:33b (NIV)

IT’S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE

How often do we allow other things to dictate our perspective?

So…how about you?

What’s your perspective?

What’s in a Name?

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them
“Mankind (Adam)” when they were created.
Genesis 5:1-2
New International Version (NIV)

אָדָם

Adam  (“mankind”, red)

אֲדָמָה

Adamah (earth, dirt, dust, red ground, red clay)

Why do we name things?

What do names mean?

Jews will not say God’s unspeakable
name for 2 reasons:

1. For fear of profaning it.
2. Because we can’t fully understand God.

Names describe
our history.

Names tell others about us.

Names tell others what we do.

Names describe our relationships
to others.

What names do we call ourselves?

The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs 18:21 NIV

What name God calls us: CHOSEN!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

What name God calls us: NEW!

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:28 NIV

He who was seated on the throne said,
“I am making everything new!”
Revelation 21:5 NIV

So what about you? What names are you going to listen to?

that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-21 New International Version (NIV)

I’ve heard it said,
That people come into our lives,
For a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are lead to those,
Who help us most to grow if we let them
And we help them in return
Well I don’t know if I believe that’s true
But I know I’m who I am today,
Because I knew you

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Romans 8:1-4 New Living Translation (NLT)

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this:
‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no commandment greater than these.”

Mark 12:29-31 New International Version (NIV)

“…unable to reconcile Valjean’s merciful acts with his [Javert’s] conception of Valjean as an irredeemable criminal.
Refusing to compromise his principles but no longer able to hold them sacred, he finds himself torn between God and the law and commits suicide, throwing himself into the Seine [river].” – (Wikipedia)

The Story of Ruth

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried.
May the Lord deal with me, be it every so severely if even death separates you and me.” When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.”

ADAM AND EVE
Genesis 3

JONAH

JACOB
“HEEL GRABBER”
Genesis 25-36

He spent the night there and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau: two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants,
“Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”

Genesis 32:13-16 New International Version (NIV)

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him,
he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,” he answered.

Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob,
but Israel, because you have struggled with God
and with humans and have overcome.”
Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”
Then he blessed him there.

So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
[Peniel means face of God]
The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,
and he was limping because of his hip.
Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of
Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

Genesis 32:24-32 (NIV)

We wrestle with God,
trying to earn things
that can’t be earned,
only received.

But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him;
he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.

Genesis 33:4 NIV

So what about you?

Radical Hospitality

The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre,
as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the the tent entrance to meet them and bowed down to the ground. He said,
“My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on – since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.”

Genesis 18:1-5 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah [his wife], and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes.” Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good,
and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf
that he had prepared, and set it before them;
and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.
Genesis 18:6-8 (NRSV)

Generosity

We Value Generosity

Luke 19:1-9: Jesus and Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Luke 19:8-10 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

2 Corinthians 5:17 New International Version (NIV)

“I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. You’ll never – I promise – regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we’re at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind. Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults – unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Don’t condemn those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on people; you’ll find life a lot easier. Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back – given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.”

Luke 6:35-38 The Message

Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.

Luke 6:38 The Message

God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7

WE CAN’T OUT-GIVE GOD!

Generosity vs. Greed

Selfless Giving

If generosity brings blessing, why is it so difficult?

Surrender

We have what we have because of God’s generosity.
Being generous is a very basic way of saying “thank you, Lord.”

How can we be more generous?
By surrendering our lives, ourselves, our stuff to God through Jesus Christ.

Possibility Thinking & Excellence

WE VALUE POSSIBILITY THINKING

With God,
all things are possible.

Is anything too difficult for the Lord?
Genesis 18:14 NASB

A “Can-Do” Mindset

If you think you can,
or you think you can’t, you’re right.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth,
it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 19:23-24
New International Version (NIV)

Jesus looked at them and said,
“With man this is impossible, but not with God;
all things are possible with God.”

Genesis 18:14 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Jesus looked at them and said,
“With man this is impossible, but not with God;
all things are possible with God.”
Mark 10:27 (NIV)

WE VALUE EXCELLENCE

Giving our best to God
and others.

And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
Colossians 3:17 New Living Translation (NLT)

“I am honored all over the world. And there are people who know how to worship me all over the world, who honor me by bringing their best to me. They’re saying it everywhere: ‘God is greater, this God-of-Angel-Armies.’ All except you. Instead of honoring me, you profane me. You profane me when you say, ‘Worship is not important, and what we bring to worship is of no account,’ and when you say, ‘I’m bored – this doesn’t do anything for me.’ You act so superior, sticking your noses in the air –
act superior to me, God-of-the-Angel-Armies!
And when you do offer something to me,
it’s a hand-me-down, or broken, or useless.
Do you think I’m going to accept it?
This is God speaking to you!”

Malachi 1:11-13 The Message

Where is God calling you to step out in faith,
to go beyond your normal possibilities?

Are you giving God your best
or your leftovers?
